James L. Adams earned his BA in mechanical engineering at CalTech in 1955. He studied art at UCLA them came to Stanford where he earned his master's and doctoral degrees in 1959 and 1961. After a few years at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he joined the Stanford faculty in the School of Engineering in 1966.
